The base station is the only part of the system that needs to be within range of cellular reception. It is the channel through which you gain access to your out-of-coverage assets and animals.
Once installed, the base station provides a 2 kilometre radio coverage radius to communicate with all your sensors, enabling you to monitor assets and livestock where cellular reception is limited or non-existent.

The base station is installed on a tower 10-12 meters high, which the farmer must provide and erect. Agri-Alert provides installation guidance to ensure optimal placement and setup. Base station installation is straightforward: orient the solar panel north, ensure all components are securely fastened, and neatly attach the aerial wire. Installation requires only the basic skills of fastening two U-bolts.
Sensors and collars communicate with the base station via radio signals – no cellular reception is required. The base station then uses the cellular network to transmit alarms to the farmer. All base stations are capable and designed for 2G, 3G and 4G connectivity.
During the initial calibration process, we establish a baseline by monitoring the herd's movement patterns over 4 days. We use this baseline data to calibrate collars to your herd's unique patterns. However, the system also continuously learns from the collars’ real-time sensor data transmitted to the base station, refining the behavioural profile over time and adapting to seasonal changes in animal movement. When the herd's activity deviates from the established baseline, the system triggers an alarm.
Activity collars monitor herd behaviour and generate alarms when activity deviates from established baselines. GPS collars offer all the features of activity collars, plus the ability to determine the animal's position within 5m, set geo-fences, and map movement patterns. While GPS collars command a premium over activity-only models, the additional investment is justified by enhanced location precision and movement-mapping capabilities.
For farms exceeding the base station's range, relay stations can extend radio network coverage to additional zones. Each relay station can cover another 1,250 hectares. Our team conducts a comprehensive signal coverage analysis of each farm to determine optimal base station placement and height, ensuring maximum radio coverage and system reliability.
The base station has multiple fail-safes built in. A motion sensor triggers an alarm immediately if the unit is removed from the tower, protecting against theft. The integrated battery provides four days of backup power, even in low-light conditions, ensuring continued operation during extended cloudy periods. Additionally, the system continuously monitors battery levels and alerts the farmer if power reserves fall below safe thresholds. If the base station goes offline for any reason, you’ll receive an immediate notification. This multi-layered approach ensures you are never caught unaware of system issues.
